There are so many articles about wedding-planning etiquette, but how about some guidelines for the girl who wants to elope?  Eloping sounds easy, but those choosing to run away together may have just as many questions as those planning a huge wedding!  The biggest being “how do we tell people we got eloped?!”

Your immediate family, especially your parents, should be told face-to-face.  Traditionally the parents of the bride would send announcements to friends and relatives as a sign that they approve the marriage.  This could also be sent by both parents together.

These days your announcement doesn’t have to carry the message of acceptance, but can be sent by your parents, both sets of parents or by you and your husband.  If you do decide to send something out as a couple, be sure to use your maiden name, instead of your married name.   If your parents send the announcement it should read:

Mr. and Mrs. John Michael Doe
Have the honor of announcing the marriage of their daughter
Jane Marie
to
Mr. Andrew Donald Dreamboat
on Friday, the twenty-fourth of April
two thousand and nine
Las Vegas, Nevada

If both parents send the announcement it should read:

Mr. and Mrs. John Michael Doe
and
Mr. and Mrs. Aaron David Dreamboat
announce the marriage of
Jane Marie Doe
and
Andrew Donald Dreamboat
on Friday, the twenty-fourth of April
two thousand and nine
Las Vegas, Nevada
