Summer is here and so are the bugs!  This year the recession has caused many people to take pest extermination into their own hands as an attempt to save money.  Although this seems like a great alternative in the short term, it may end up costing you more in the long term according to industry research firm IBISWorld.

“Although do-it-yourself pest control is damaging [to the pest control industry] in the short term, improper extermination may actually cause the spread of pests to increase, especially bed bugs,” explained Toon van Beeck, senior analyst with IBISWorld. “This will create more work, becoming a positive for the industry in the long term.

According to IBISWorld there has been a 70 percent rise in bed bugs infestation since 2001, due to the increased travel, immigration, insecticide resistance and changes in pest control practices.  Exterminator businesses are seeing a softening in residential pest control sales, as it can cost as much as $300-$600 to treat an apartment for bed bugs, but overall  there may be more infestations as a result of do-it-yourself home extermination – costing you more money!

Looks like you get what you pay for.
