Okay ladies, today is one of the best days of the year…National Cupdcake Day!!  So to celebrate, you have to go get yourself a sweet treat.

As marvelous as this day is, few businesses are offering freebies (rude).  Here are a few of the deals we found:

Susie Cakes in Los Angeles is offering a free cupcake in exchange for an unwrapped toy.  This deal is more Christmas-oriented than it is National Cupcake-Day oriented, but who’s complaining.

While the price of these miniature cakes is definitely not miniature at $28.00 for a box of 6, is offering a special, free overnight shipping upgrade, which is a saving of $15.

Otherwise, you’ll have to go to your local baker for a free cupcake.  Maybe your request will wise them up to participating in next year’s most fabulous day.

groceriesAmericans have many choices when it comes to supermarket purchases: store brand, commercial brand, organic, etc. – but what is the cost difference and does it vary across the nation?  Industry research firm, IBISWorld, investigated grocery costs in Los Angeles, New York City and Chicago to gage consumer spending across the U.S.  Here are the findings for the average grocery cart:

On average for all food-brand categories (store, commercial and organic), Chicago is the cheapest of the three analyzed regions, coming in at $115.73. Los Angeles was the most expensive at $124.43, while New York City was slightly cheaper at $122.66.

The consumers with the lowest grocery bill ($92.04) are those in Chicago purchasing store brand products. This compares with $104.54 and $110.64 for New York City and Los Angeles, respectively.

Chicago did however have the most expensive organic bill, coming in at $142.95, and Los Angeles had the cheapest at $137.52. This is due to Los Angeles’ proximity to Mexico as well the high volume of food production in California.   With the biggest selling area of organic groceries being fresh produce – expected to account for 42 percent of sales this year – and California accounting for 53.8 percent of the nation’s melon and vegetable production, it is no surprise Los Angeles shoppers have cheaper organics.

“Large supermarkets have bypassed wholesaling activities as much as possible, and by taking greater control of the entire supply chain they have been able to minimize the cost structure for store brands versus competing products,” said George Van Horn, senior analyst with IBISWorld.  “Organic markets still look to ‘own the supply chain’, but they operate on a much smaller scale, resulting in markups.”

According to IBISWorld’s findings, the average organic grocery cart is about 18 percent more expensive than a grocery cart primarily filled with commercially branded products.  But the organic grocery cart is a staggering 37.6 percent more expensive than a basket primarily filled with store branded products.

“Despite the high price of organic products and the recession restricting budgets, the organic food market is still growing by four percent in 2009,” adds Van Horn.

michael jackson cardiac arrestThe King of Pop, Michael Jackson, has died.

Jackson apparently went into cardiac arrest and received CPR in the ambulance on the way to a Los Angeles hospital.  According to the Los Angeles Times, he was reportedly not breathing by the time paramedics arrived.

The legendary singer was 50 years old.

First Farrah and now Michael; it’s a sad day in Hollywood.  Our condolences to both their families.

UPDATE:  Jackson’s former publicist released this statement, “As someone who served as Michael Jackson’s publicist during the first child molestation incident, I must confess I am not surprised by today’s tragic news. Michael has been on an impossibly difficult and often self-destructive journey for years. His talent was unquestionable but so too was his discomfort with the norms of the world. A human simply can not withstand this level of prolonged stress.”

yatai1In Los Angeles the words “gourmet” and “low-cost” seem like oxymorons.  Well that’s no longer the case when it comes to Asian-tapas bar, Yatai.  This West Hollywood eatery has excellent food, fantastic service and a fabulous atmosphere…all at a reasonable price!

Last night my boyfriend and I visited the restaurant for the second time and were once again thoroughly impressed with our dining experience.  After a few rounds of drinks and several dishes, the bill was only $80.  Why go to Koi, which is overpriced and has mediocre service, when you can eat just as well and spend half as much at Yatai?

Here’s a few dish suggestions:

  • Tempura pumpkin w/curry salt – $5
  • Spicy tuna over crispy rice – $6
  • Bite-sized rib-eye steak w/caramelized onions – $16

When the weather is nice, Yatai also has outdoor seating.  The restaurant is located at 8535 W. Sunset Blvd.  Parking can be a problem, but it’s so marvelous it’s worth it.

Does having another woman around make a guy more attractive in the dating scene?  According to Trevor Dewey, the founder of California-based Wing Girl LA, men have better luck with the ladies when they have a platonic girl friend around.

Wing Girls LA is a dating service for men that provides “wing girls” to help them meet women in a social setting.  The girls meet their clients at a nightspot, accompany clients to events and even provide personal shopping services to help them be more fashion forward.

How much does it cost?  Rates range from $75-85 per hour, with a four-hour minimum.  Wing Girls LA also offers dating coaches at $34.99 a month or a three-hour outing, with two wing girls, for $750.

Dewey says, “Most of the people are shy, but they’re interesting, good guys.  They’re just not as smooth as some of the other guys out there.”

What do think Marvelous Girls?  Would you be upset to hear that your husband/boyfriend used a wing girl to pick you up?
