Summer is here and so are the bugs!  This year the recession has caused many people to take pest extermination into their own hands as an attempt to save money.  Although this seems like a great alternative in the short term, it may end up costing you more in the long term according to industry research firm IBISWorld.

“Although do-it-yourself pest control is damaging [to the pest control industry] in the short term, improper extermination may actually cause the spread of pests to increase, especially bed bugs,” explained Toon van Beeck, senior analyst with IBISWorld. “This will create more work, becoming a positive for the industry in the long term.

According to IBISWorld there has been a 70 percent rise in bed bugs infestation since 2001, due to the increased travel, immigration, insecticide resistance and changes in pest control practices.  Exterminator businesses are seeing a softening in residential pest control sales, as it can cost as much as $300-$600 to treat an apartment for bed bugs, but overall  there may be more infestations as a result of do-it-yourself home extermination – costing you more money!

Looks like you get what you pay for.

Each year about 2,000 children between the ages of one and 14 die and more than 3 million are injured as a result of home accidents, according to a leading consumer safety organization. Most of these deaths and injuries occur during the spring and summer months, when kids are home from school and parents are away.

As children spend more time at home during summer break, parents should ask themselves if they are doing everything they can to keep kids safe at home,” said Anne-Marie Rouse, with ADT Security Services. “It’s easy to get into vacation mode and forget about home dangers that put kids at risk.”
Rouse urged parents to remember that a home can be a very dangerous place for children if safety and security measures are overlooked. She suggests the following tips to help protect children:

  • Lock up all matches and lighters and blow out candles when you leave the room or go to sleep. Never leave young children unattended near an open flame.
  • Always supervise young children around water. Never allow older siblings to supervise children in or around water.
  • To help prevent children from falling out of upper level windows install specially designed locks. Teach older children how to lock and unlock windows in an emergency.
  • Help prevent poisoning by removing all medicines from purses, pockets and drawers. Lock all medications and household products in a cabinet with a child safety lock and keep cosmetics out of reach of small children.
  • According to the Canada Safety Council, the best defense against fires, gas leaks and other emergencies is a well-rehearsed escape plan. While children are home for summer break take advantage of this time to create and practice your evacuation plan.
  • Consider a monitored home security system, including monitored smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. These can detect dangerous levels of harmful CO and smoke and then alert a monitoring center which notifies first responders, giving them vital, specific information about babies, young children, seniors and disabled people in the home. Many systems can also be programmed to “chirp” when a protected door or window is opened, which can also alert parents to a child’s whereabouts or activities.

Rouse wants parents to know that they can reduce their children’s chances of accidental injury and even death by making home safety the top priority on their summer to-do list.

Are you looking for a low-cost way to naturally color Easter eggs?  According to © Diane Laney Fitzpatrick   you can use ingredients from your back yard and kitchen pantry to decorate eggs this season.

Natural Egg Dyes

  1. 1.  Place eggs in a single layer in a large pot. Add water until eggs are covered and water is about ½-inch over the tops of the eggs. Add 2 teaspoons white vinegar to the pot unless you’re using onion skins. Don’t mix onion skins and vinegar.
  2. Add the natural dye material (see list below). If the dye ingredient is to be boiled first, boil it in a small amount of water and add the substance, water and all, to the pot.
  3. Bring the pot to a boil.
  4. Reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes.
  5. If you’re happy with the color, remove the eggs from the pot. If you want a more vivid color, remove the eggs and strain the dye through a coffee filter. Put the filtered dye liquid and the eggs in a jar or back in the pan and let sit overnight. If you want your eggs to have a speckled effect, don’t strain the dye before letting sit overnight.
  6. The next morning, carefully remove the eggs from the water. (The vinegar will have weakened the eggshells. When they air dry they’ll harden again.)
  7. Let air dry.
  8. For a glossy look, rub some cooking oil on the eggs with a paper towel.

To get colors, use these natural ingredients:

  • Lavender – Purple grape juice or violet blossoms plus 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • Blue Violet – Red onion skins (boiled)
  • Blue – Blueberries or red cabbage leaves (boiled)
  • Green – Spinach leaves
  • Yellowish Green – Yellow Delicious apple peels (boiled)
  • Yellow – Lemon peel, orange peel, carrot tops, ground cumin or ground turmeric
  • Brown – Strong black coffee or black walnut shells
  • Orange – Yellow onion skins (boiled)
  • Pink – Cranberries, raspberries or beets

The amounts of the dye materials will depend on how vivid you want the color. For pale, pastel colors, add a small amount. For more vibrant colors with onion skins, use 2 cups; with spices use 4 tablespoons; for the others, use your own judgment.

Decorating with onion skins
Wrap the outer skin of an onion around a hard-boiled egg, overlapping to cover the entire egg. Hold the onion skins in place with rubber bands. Hard boil the egg. When unwrapped, the egg will have the color and design of the onion skin.

I personally think laundry detergent is too expensive for what it is…just soap.  And after you add the fabric softener and dryer sheets, you practically need to take out a second mortgage.

Well, I ran across this article with a recipe to make homemade, less-expensive, laundry detergent:

Check it out and let me know what you think!
