We saw these save-the-date announcements and totally fell in love! Handkerchiefs can put a creative, elegant spin on your upcoming wedding and they’re so easy to make at home.

Items needed:

1) Handkerchiefs

2)  Scissors

3)  Iron templates

4)  An iron

The trickiest part is reversing the letters on the template so they don’t iron-on backwards.  Once you write your save-the-date announcement in a Word or any other text-edit document, go to print and specify that you want the image printed as “mirror”.  This is usually located under “preferences” in your print menu.

Once you have the text printed on the iron template, place the image where you like it on the hankie.  Make sure it’s straight and then iron it on.  It’s that easy!

If you’re not the crafty type, then you can also buy save-the-date hankies at Lucky Luxe.  Click here for more details.

This is a great inexpensive gift for those who are hard to buy for.

There are some marvelous red wines out there that won’t cost you an arm and a leg to purchase.  So why not drink a wine that pleases your taste buds and your wallet?

Here are some of Marvelous Girl’s favorite red wines under $12:

Bogle merlot ($8.99) –  Bright summer cherries greet the nose and palate, while touches of tea and rich red fruit are mouth-filling and lingering. The finish, reinforced by smooth, assertive tannins, hints of toasty oak and spice.  This wine is available at most conventional grocery stores.

Menage a Trois red ($9.79) – This wine brings together three strange bedfellows: Zinfandel, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.  The Zinfandel, a saucy tease that brings blackberry and raspberry jam to the relationship. Merlot, with its generous mouth feel and red fruits, fits perfectly in the middle. The rich flavors and firm tannins of Cabernet Sauvignon make it the ideal candidate for the bottom layer of the trio.  This wine is available at most conventional grocery stores.

Purple Moon Shiraz ($3.99) – Solid, flavorful and surprisingly complex for such an inexpensive bottle of wine. It has big berry flavors and some chocolate at the end.  This wine is available at Trader Joe’s.

Ruberneck cabernet sauvignon ($12) – Dark cherry and raspberry fruit aromas leap from the glass, accented with hints of milk chocolate and a touch of smoky oak.  This wine is available at select grocery stores like Bristol Farms.

Wine That Loves ($9.99) – These wines are designed to pair with the foods Americans enjoy most often and to reflect American tastes.  They are tailored to food lovers, but their world-class quality, distinctive character and winning style also will delight wine aficionados.  With names like “Wine That Loves Roasted Chicken” and “Wine That Loves Past With Tomato Sauce”, there’s simply no way to mess up your wine pairing.  This wine is available at Cost Plus World Market, but may not be there much longer because it has been flying off the shelves!

Enjoy!

vinegar natural cleanerDid you know that vinegar is one of the greatest natural cleaning solutions?  This multipurpose cleaner is completely non-toxic and will not harm your family or pets whatsoever – plus it’s cheaper than conventional cleaners like Windex and Lysol!

All you need to do is mix an equal amount of water and apply it to the surface you wish to clean. Use it in your kitchen to clean draws, sinks, cabinets, countertops or appliances.

For stubborn stains, just get some baking soda and mix it with a little bit of water. This is a very inexpensive natural cleaning solution that can be used in almost any situation to clean and deodorize.

For stubborn bathroom stains, get a simple lemon, cut it in half and mix it with baking soda. For a natural cleaning solution for furniture, mix the lemon with olive oil.

Remember that chemicals can cause damage to the environment when washed down into our rivers and waterways.  By using natural products, like vinegar, you will not only save money but you will help the environment as well.

bridesWith the recession in full force, many people are putting off their engagement ring shopping until better times.  But, thanks to the hot new trend of band stacking, you can now move forward with your wedding plans and still be chic – for cheap.  Women these days are passing on the giant solitaire and instead opting for two, three or even four wedding bands!

The trick is to choose different stone shapes, colors and sizes (like the photo). For those even more daring, throw in a yellow-gold band among your white-gold, platinum or silver bands.

The trend of stacking wedding bands is ultra glamorous; so no one ever has to know that you can’t afford a giant rock.  Marvelous!

Moms-to-be concerned about potential risks of taking cold medication or using certain cleaning products can now find helpful information online and over the phone.

A new website (www.ctispregnancy.org) offering expectant moms a one-stop source for finding the latest information about the potential risks of exposure to drugs, chemicals and other harmful agents has been launched by the California Teratogen Information Service (CTIS). The field of Teratology studies the causes and biological processes leading to abnormal development and birth defects.

CTIS is a non-profit founded and directed by faculty and staff from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, and serving the entire state of California. CTIS has been providing pregnancy risk counseling via a confidential and no-cost Pregnancy Risk Information Line for the past 27 years. Experts at the toll-free number, 1-800-532-3749, field questions in both English and Spanish about exposure concerns to help pregnant and breastfeeding women and their health providers assess possible risk factors associated with harmful substances.

Most common substances that pregnant women encounter will not cause birth defects, but others might be harmful if taken in large doses and at a crucial time in pregnancy, explained Kenneth Lyons Jones, MD, medical director of CTIS, faculty member in the department of pediatrics at UC San Diego School of Medicine and a world-renowned research physician, noted for his pioneering work on fetal alcohol syndrome.
